IntroductionI never played a bioshock game because I though these games were sequences of corridors with some scripted moments.
And, when I first saw the trailers of this game I was very skeptical about it. But now, I know I couldn't be more wrong. |
My score: 9.0 Awesome |
The Art style
I feel that the best way to start is by talking about the most obvious thing. The art style of this game is a very well done steampunk style. It has flying warships, It has ballons and steam horses. It has also some of the best graphics I ever seen and all that combined, creates its own little world.
The game has also an amazing soundtrack, wich combines some of the best anacrhonistic covers I ever heard with newly made tracks that releases violent notes and sequences when you get an expecially gruesome kill.
The Gameplay
Just because this game has a sort of a cartoony look, don't think it is less gruesome or scary than the other bioshock games.
I think the weakest part of this game is its gameplay.
It is diverse, with the 8 vigors that do diferent things; the huge variety of wepons and enemies; skylines wich you can ride to get to advantage points; and tears, wich are defensive or offensive buildings you can bring into the fight.

But the gameplay is compromised for it's lack of progression. I rarely used any of the vigors and the few times I used them I had to force myself to do it. Upgrading the weapons is pretty useless because you can only carry 2 weapons at a time, and you need different weapons for different occasions. Upgrading vigors is also stupid because it is very expensive and the vigors are not all that usefull. Also, the game is a bit easy, even in its hardest difficulty, beacuse you get revived instantly by Elizabeth (whom i will talk about later) every time you die, with the single punishment of loosing some money.
The 1999 mode tries to make the game a little harder by adding a permanent death if you die out of money, but even this hardcore mode is easy, because you find a lot of money in the world and there isn't that big necessity of wasting it in anything.
the story
Last but definitely not least, there is the story. This game's story, or more specifically it's ending, is what is giving it the high reviews you see on most websites. But I can't blame anyone that gives this game that because there aren't that many good endings in video games and an ending like this is very hard to find.
The story of this game starts by beeing pretty simple. You a guy who has to bring a girl, Elizebeth, wich has the power of opening "tears" or windows to other dimensions, from a flying city.
Elizebeth starts of by looking a bit like a Disney princess...

...but then she grows up to be someone really powerfull and a bit scary. The story grows up to, and it becomes a story that talks about deep themes like the meaning of life, trans-dimensional traveling. The story of this game looks like the story that you would find in a book.
But the ending is the best part. The ending includes a plot twist that you are really not expecting and that makes you want to play the game all over again so that you can find out the references you missed.
Now, the story can be great, but it has it's own problems, the larger of them beeing the lack of interactivity and choice. There are no meaningful choices in this game and there is only one ending for everyone, no matter what you do. This is a bit strange comming from bioshock, a series that featured various endings depending on what you did in the game, but, has I said, this game hasn't got any of those things, and that is a bit of a problem. This is a game, not a film.

Final Notes
This game is the best game in this year so far. And while being far from a perfect game, it is still something I'm going to be playing over and over again.
So, when you get the chance, you must buy this game, for it's story and for it's beautiful world.
There will be some DLC for this game but I think that is a bit stupid considering the conclusive ending.
Anyway, thanks for your time and I will see you on the next review.
